The International Living Future Institute is premised on the belief that providing a compelling vision for the future is a fundamental requirement for reconciling humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

Our beautiful planet is capable of supporting vast diverse ecosystems, allowing human communities to thrive, and we are capable as a species of living in balance with ecosystems and in balance with each other. At ILFI, we envision a future where our planet and humanity are thriving, and we work towards that future every day. We refer to this future as the Living Future.

Certifications

The Core Green Building Certification

"The Core Green Building Certificationâ„  (Core) seeks to rapidly diminish the gap between the highest levels of established green building certification programs and the aspirations of the Living Building Challenge. Regardless of the size or location of the project, Core simplifies the complexity contained within our current understanding of how we define a ‘green building’.

Joining Zero Carbon Certification, Zero Energy Certification, Living Building Challenge Petal Certification and Living Certification, Core completes the family of building certification programs administered by the International Living Future Institute. Together, they create a suite of certifications designed to address the many types of highly aspirational projects. The Imperatives of the Core Green Building Certification fit seamlessly into the requirements in the Living Building Challenge; it is both a stand-alone program and an integral part of the Living Building Challenge.

Projects that achieve Core certification can claim to be role models in their communities for redefining the future of the built environment. Whether the project is Zero Energy, Zero Carbon, Core, Living Building Challenge Petal or Living Certified, it has a home in the construct of ILFI building certifications"

Living Building Challenge

"LBC 4.0 focuses on the relationship between impact and effort. While LBC 4.0 continues the standard’s mission of visionary, but attainable building goals, it also recognizes that not all projects face the same challenges or share in the same opportunities. Regenerative design should be attainable to everyone, everywhere. With 4.0, we are creating a streamlined approach focused on maximizing positive impacts specific to the place, community, and culture of the project.

Living Buildings are:

  • Regenerative buildings that connect occupants to light, air, food, nature, and community.

  • Self-sufficient and remain within the resource limits of their site.

  • Create a positive impact on the human and natural systems that interact with them."

Zero Energy Certification

"Zero energy is recognized worldwide as one of the highest aspirations in energy performance in the built environment. Zero Energy Certification allows projects to demonstrate that the building is truly operating as claimed, harnessing energy from the sun, wind or earth to produce net annual energy demand. Through a third-party audit of actual performance data, Zero Energy certified projects are proven to be highly efficient buildings that rely only on clean energy, without onsite combustion of fossil fuels. Learn more about how your project can pursue Zero Energy Certification to take credible climate action, celebrate a significant accomplishment, and be a beacon of inspiration in the marketplace."

Zero Carbon Certification

Zero Carbon Certification provides a vision for a future of carbon positive buildings that reverse the effects of climate change. By addressing both operational and embodied carbon emissions, Zero Carbon Certification offers organizations a valuable tool to demonstrate credible climate action. Zero Carbon certified buildings are verified by a third-party after a 12-month performance period to be energy efficient, combustion free (or actively phasing out combustion), and powered by renewals. Learn more about the only performance-based carbon standard that addresses both operational and embodied carbon. Join other global leaders in taking climate action now."
